Join Globe Docs for a screening of “THE IRISH PUB.” THE IRISH PUB is a eulogy to the greatest institution in Irish society, the pub or more specifically the traditional Irish publican’s who run them. The characters in this exceptionally endearing film all run and own pubs that have been in their families for generations and it is through their warmth, wit and wisdom that we gain an insight into the heart and soul of THE IRISH PUB.

THE IRISH PUB is also a look at Ireland and who we are as a people. The history of Ireland, characters, song, music, anecdotes, politics, sport, religion, famine and the Irish sense of humour are all reflected upon. These pubs reach out not just to every Irish person today but to the Irish 50 years ago, 100 years ago and even as far back as 500 years ago and to the Diaspora abroad. The names over their doors are iconic. The stuff hanging on their walls is historic. However, the stories these pub owners tell are priceless.

Immediately following the screening, Director Alex Fegan and Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen will host a Q&A.

Alex Fegan made his first feature film, the sci-fi Man Made Men (2010) while working full time as a lawyer in Dublin, Ireland. The film went on to win various awards internationally including Best Foreign Feature at the Arizona International Film Festival. He followed this up by leaving his job and making a short film set in the 17th Century, The Court Astronomer (2011), which also did well at festivals. Next came the feature documentary, which he directed, produced, filmed and edited, The Irish Pub, which looks at Ireland's most famous institution. Alex put a trailer online, which was seen by a large Irish distribution company and was released in cinemas in Ireland and the UK followed by the USA and Canada. Alex is now directing another documentary about people in Ireland aged 100 years of age or over, with the support of The Irish Film Board.
